The famous villages of Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Cairanne started out as Côtes-du Rhône Villages, eventually gaining their own appellations in recognition of their quality. The next village to watch soaring in popularity, and widely touted as a candidate for elevation is Plan de Dieu, a source of fine reds just north of Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe.

François Meffre’s Château Raspail is one of the best we have tasted, and has become a firm customer favourite - in fact, our most popular Rhône red. The 2022 could be my favourite vintage yet, with its striking balance of ripe bramble fruit, Mediterranean spice and rich texture. A definite autumn and winter-warmer.

A wonderful dark red core greets you upon pouring, with vibrant aromas of spiced plum, red cherry and notes of blueberry and bell pepper, very expressive and alluring. The palate is laden with lovely, juicy dark and red berry fruit, subtle hints of spice and cracked pepper rounded and plump from the sunny 2022 vintage, yet still retaining a freshness. Plan de Dieu has a particular rich tannic structure - held in check by the warmth, and ripe, expressive fruit.

"Plan de Dieu is one of the Côtes du Rhône-Villages appellations, and this is a blend of very old vine Syrah, Carignan and Mourvèdre. It has a very appealing nose, filled with blueberry and spicy red plum fruit, forward and elegantly sprinkled with white pepper. In the mouth there's a really juicy, lip-smacking fruit quality, the 14.5% alcohol, chunky tannins and nicely-pitched acidity adding deep support."
