2000 Château Batailley, Pauillac
"Tasted at the Batailley vertical tasting at the château, the 2000 Batailley displayed youthful vigor on the nose with boysenberry and damson fruit, incense and iodine. As I remarked when I last tasted this in 2011, there is an opulence here that this estate rarely produced up until this period. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin; this bottle is more backward than others, with firm tannin providing sturdy backbone. It remains a "burly" Pauillac for the vintage, and it is certainly masculine in style. Then again, that is a leitmotif of the millennial vintage. As such, I can envisage this mellowing in four to six year's time, whereupon it will have the substance to give drinking pleasure over many years." Drink 2020 - 2045. 91 pts., Neal Martin, robertparker.com
(tasted April 2016)

2005 Château Batailley, Pauillac
"The 2005 Batailley is dark in hue with little aging on the rim. The nose is backward, tight and almost "moody", piqued that it did not undergo a three- to four-hour decant. Firm tannins frame the palate. The oak may not be as assimilated as the best 2005s. Dark chocolate and espresso hints develop with time in the glass. It hasn't moved much since I last tasted it, and it is just a bit formulaic. But I would keep it cellared for several more years as Batailley, in great vintages, has a propensity to age. Tasted at lunch in London." Drink 2028-2055. 92+ pts., Neal Martin, vinous.com
(tasted October 2022)

2009 Château Batailley, Pauillac
"The 2009 Batailley seems a little closed on the nose at first and needs more encouragement than its peers, eventually unfurling with cedar and graphite infused black fruit, slightly earthy in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, quite linear and poised with a touch of cracked black pepper on the finish. Excellent." Drink 2020-2038. 92 pts., Neal Martin, robertparker.com
(tasted February 2019)

2010 Château Batailley, Pauillac
"The 2010 Batailley has a vivacious, outgoing and quintessentially Pauillac nose with blackberry, mint and graphite bursting from the glass and demanding attention! The palate is medium-bodied with ample black fruit laced with graphite, sage and cracked black pepper. Wonderful depth and grip here, fanning out nicely towards the finish where there is a soupcon of oak still to be subsumed, therefore give this another three or four years. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal." Drink 2024-2050. 94 pts., Neal Martin, vinous.com
(tasted February 2020)

2016 Château Batailley, Pauillac
"The 2016 Batailley has an attractive, meaty bouquet with more red fruit than black, unlike many of its peers. With aeration it appears to gain more floral notes and lift. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, linear and focused, offering pencil lead, cedar and light spicy notes toward the conservative, controlled finish. A mocha-tinged aftertaste emanates from the oak. Good potential, but it needs time. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting." Drink 2022-2050. 93+ pts., Neal Martin, vinous.com
(tasted January 2020)

2017 Château Batailley, Pauillac
"The 2017 Batailley has a perfumed bouquet, quite floral for this property, with violets infusing the vivacious red berry fruit. The palate is a little chewy on the entry, but it pulls through nicely towards a cohesive, dense finish. It feels primal, more so than its peers at the moment. Hopefully, it will develop more personality with bottle age... I think it will."
