Its no wonder Château de Clotte has been our best-selling claret over the last year or so - a Saint-Emilion-styled, Côtes de Castillon claret from a fabulous vintage.

A best-seller bound to sell out. So, after the 2016 did so last year, it was clear that we needed to get in place whatever next vintage was available. It turned out that this was the 2019, which wed tasted and enjoyed a few times in France. Since then, weve been waiting and waiting for its release - now its finally here.

The delicious 2019 takes the class and structure of the 2016 and enhances it with a dapple of extra sunshine. Its younger certainly, but riper, rounder, suppler, and more luxurious in texture. In short, a bottle of Saint-Émilion finesse without the price tag.

The Côtes de Castillon lie on a ridge to the east of the plateau of Saint-Émilion and share a similar terroir - limestone, gravel and clay. In my opinion, here is the most underrated appellation (along with Fronsac) in all of Bordeaux. The wines are terrific, the prices modest, and offer much better value than those of Saint-Émilion - by a stretch.

Château de Clottes 2019 vintage is a blend of 50% cabernet franc, 40% merlot and 10% malbec, with lovely rich berry fruit flavours and a hint of spice, tobacco and vanilla from its oak aging. It is still youthful, but opened an hour beforehand and it blossoms in the glass. Utterly delicious now, it promises at least 5-7 more years of sumptuous drinking pleasure.

How does the wine taste? Customer Reviews (4)
Warmth on the nose that enhances aromas of roasted coffee and candy fruit. On the palate, seductive flavours of black cherry meld with a rich tannic structure. The mid-palate is aerial, leaving an impression of crisp fruit that leads to a long, aromatic finish.

We have enjoyed several bottles of Ch de Clotte 2019 and it is consistently good, everyday drinking. It is our go-to red and matches most foods with its robust, yet silky, roundness.

The 2016 was a cracker, I had at least two cases, now making a start on a case of the 2019, slightly different in character as I think accurately described by FVD, but another top notch wine which is drinking perfectly now, and well above its price. Peter

I bought three bottles. When I'd tasted the first one, I ordered a case. It's my idea of what red Bordeaux should be and it goes down extremely well with visitors. I still have a number of bottles left, but I'm considering buying another case before it disappears. That's how good it is.

This would be an excellent wine at twice the price. Initially I bought just a couple of bottles to try it and found it so rich and satisfying that I immediately ordered a case.

"...I had it marked down for at least twice the price, so classic and sophisticated is it. With intense, ripe, fresh and bitter cherries in the mouth and sweet and savoury spice, its finish goes on and on. It's a cast-iron belter at a derisory price."
Jonathan Ray, The Spectator Magazine
"A ripe and chunky right bank Bordeaux, blending 50% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 10% Malbec. Castillon lies east of Saint-Émilion, with similar soils of limestone, gravel and clay. This has a nicely savoury tapenade character to firm, dark black fruit. In the mouth there's quite an expansive fruit core here, plummy and chocolaty, the tannins are fat and ripe too, and the acidity balances nicely in a very satisfying glass of typically right bank Bordeaux at a knock-down price really. It will also cellar for a few more years for sure."
