"The 2022 Ch. de Fleurie from Maison Jean Loron in, erm, Fleurie, Beaujolais, also scored impressively high marks. Made from 100 per cent Gamay, of course, it’s absolutely charming and so succulent it’s almost thirst-quenching, with abundant blackberry/cherry fruit and barely noticeable tannins. Serve it slightly chilled, sit back and enjoy."

In the glass there's a gentle purple hue to the brim, the core is dark and deep in colour hinting at the concentration to follow. The warmer 2022 vintage is evident, and a swirl of the glass releases enticing, bold aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry with a hint of dark liquorice and spice and when served on the cooler side there's a slight hint of orchard fruit too.
The palate is also slightly more fruit-forward than the preceding 2021 vintage leading with tart, dark cherry flavour that progresses to more of a dark currant character with delicate notes of cracked black pepper and spice. The tannins are fine and grip across the palate but are perfectly balanced by a steely crispness which runs through to the finish where notes of sweet cherry and spice linger. Delicious! This is a beautiful example of fine Fleurie with delicious ripe red fruits on the palate but enough acidity to be very refreshing.
