And one estate ranking indisputably among the best producers of these cuvées is Mas Carlot. Long a favourite of Robert Parker and of ours, Mas Carlot is where the true essence of this intriguing, relatively unknown appellation is so luxuriously expressed.

Such that the Spectator's Jonathan Ray regularly describes their ‘Générations’ Rouge Grenache-Syrah blend as 'a belter of a red', and one pairing nicely 'with autumnal game'.

A rich, highly expressive, Syrah/Grenache blend offering notes of dried berry fruits and sweet spice, and a superb option for the Châteauneuf drinker seeking something similar but for under £15.

"I've lost count of how many previous vintages of the 2021 Mas Carlot 'Générations' from Costières de Nîmes we’ve offered. It's a belter of a red, as rewarding with summer barbecues as it is with autumnal game. A Grenache/Syrah blend, it’s deep, intense and concentrated with blackberry, blueberry, spice and dark chocolate in the mix, and Mrs R and I had a bit of a tussle over this one too."
