The new Viré-Clessé Quintaine 2022 has just arrived. It is delightfully fresh and crisp with underlying minerality from its unique terroir which was recognised when Viré-Clessé was given its own appellation within the Mâcon region nearly three decades ago.

It is a classic, fully generous, high quality white burgundy at under £20 a bottle.

Food pairing:
A rich and rewarding white burgundy like this pairs nicely with shell fish, salmon and fish pie. Also with roast chicken, cured meat, cheese, or by itself.

Producer info:
Founded in 1928, the Cave de Viré is a fine co-operative of around 200 growers situated among the regions better villages north of Mâcon. In 1998, they were instrumental in establishing the eponymous Viré-Clessé appellation from the two so-named villages. Quintaine is an ancient hamlet and lieu dit between Viré and Clessé, with parcels of limestone and clay soil particularly well suited to the production of outstanding chardonnay.

How does the wine taste? Customer Reviews (0)
Broad and expressive with ripe peach, pear and apricot aromas and notes of honeysuckle. Rich and rewarding on the palate with luscious orchard fruit and a hint of roasted nuts and brioche. All held together nicely with a refreshing cut of citrus freshness. A benchmark, and very well made drinking burgundy.

"Vérizet is a brand from Cave de Viré, a co-operative of around 200 growers in the Mâcon region. This Chardonnay comes from chalky clay-limestone soils and though unoaked, a certain richness comes from up to 24 months ageing on fine lees. There's an almond and lightly honeyed sheen to ripe yellow apple fruit. In the mouth that little bit of breadth to the texture gives a chewy richness, though the fat lemony core of fruit and acidity propels the wine. Hints of nuttiness again into the gastronomic, well-balanced finish."
