Fine French Rosé

Our selection of high quality rosé from Provence, Champagne and the South of France

It’s for a good many reasons that Provençal rosé now serves (and is served) as the go-to pink to be enjoyed whenever the sun comes out. Or even if it doesn’t come out. Typically, a luminous, pale, wild salmon pink, aromas of delicate, gentle red fruit and pepper and chiselled, mineral elegance briskly driven on the palate, there is often nothing so perfect as a good Côtes-de-Provence rosé. Here we also taste a more ethereal side of those blockbuster, red southern Rhône varietals: grenache, syrah, carignan, cinsault... Sit down with a plate of shellfish and a decent bottle from our selection and those fields of lavender and azure horizons don’t feel so far away.

Fine French Rosé
Famille Sumeire

Famille Sumeire

The Sumeire family are ‘Provençal Royalty’ tracing their origins in Trets, Provence, back to 1238. When they started making rosé is unclear but it was at least 200 years ago and they have been honing their skills ever since and are now producing rosé of the highest quality. They are not film stars or mavericks – just a delightful and charming family with a long history of producing very good rosés, all of which are great value for money.

Cellier d’Eguilles

Cellier d’Eguilles

The Cellier d’Eguilles, founded in 1923 by a band of local growers, are based in the beautiful village of Eguilles 10 km east of Aix-en-Provence. For several generations, those same growers have been making lovely rosés almost exclusively for the French market. Their rosés have never before been seen in the UK until we started importing them this month. Their vineyards are some of the highest above sea level in Provence and are noted for making premium pale rosés with flavours and freshness.

Domaine Peter Sichel

Domaine Peter Sichel

The dream started about 30 years ago when the late Peter Sichel, one of Bordeaux’s legends, found a remote vineyard high up in the Corbières mountains literally miles from anywhere in the most beautiful surroundings and with a unique stony terroir. It is also where the Albigensian Crusaders made martyrs out of the Cathars in the 13th century.

Today, Peter’s grandson Alexander Sichel lives there and makes the wines following biodynamic viticultural and vinification principles to the letter. Les Jardiniers comes from the heartland of the huge Corbières region, but Alexander and the Sichel family have decided to recognise and embrace their regional terroir, and high-altitude vineyards (the wine is now under the appellation of Cucugnan, rather than Corbières) which much better reflects the philosophy of the family and the quality of their wines from this tiny, almost inaccessible corner of the region.

Château d’Esclans

Château d’Esclans

At the fore of the ‘rosé renaissance’ we’ve witnessed over the last few years has undoubtedly been Château d’Esclans, this beautiful estate located just northeast of St. Tropez in the heart of Provence. Here, the combination of vision and expertise in rendering grenache, cinsault and rolle (vermentino) brings to cuvées such as Whispering Angel and Rock Angel a remarkable finesse, delicacy and elegance, and as such, has invigorated our appreciation of this great Provençal tradition.

Famille Negrel

Famille Negrel

Mas de Cadenet represents over 200 years of Provençal winemaking and is an estate that has since become an emblem in the Côtes-de-Provence. Located at the foot of Mont Saint-Victoire, south-facing vineyards of Grenache, Syrah, Rolle (Vermentino), Cinsault and Cabernet are organically farmed for an optimum expression of minerality and terroir. Mas de Cadenet’s are wines of great appeal, displaying the classic floral, citrus, spice and summer fruit characteristics that are typical of this much-adored region.

Champagne Michel Guilleminot

Champagne Michel Guilleminot

The wines from Champagne Guilleminot have been our sister business Mr.Wheeler’s house champagne for over two decades. Pinot noir is a challenging and extremely delicate grape that produces some of the finest and most elegant wines in the world. This 12-hectare vineyard is located in the beautiful hilly valley of the Côte des Bars, the southern part of Champagne and is the perfect terroir for pinot noir. Although the minimum required ageing process is fifteen months in Champagne, they age theirs for a minimum of three years on its lees before being released.
