Godello, Pagos del Galir, Valdeorras 2023
We've been 'banging the drum' about the quality of Spanish wines for quite a while here at FromVineyardsDirect. Every time we taste through a range, we are taken by the diversity, innovation and sheer drinkability we find from every corner of the country. Spain is justifiably renowned for its traditional reds such as Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but the new wave of exceptional whites has very much grabbed our attention, and this delicious Godello, from Valdeorras in Galicia is one of our favourite new finds.
Galicia, in the verdant North-West, is very much Spains white-wine hotspot. You may have come across the region's Albarino before, but Godello is very much its other signature varietal, combining aromatic freshness, expressive ripe citrus, orchard fruit and rich texture.
About the producer:
Valderorras is on the mountainous, eastern fringes of Galicia in north-west Spain. Its flagship grape Godello grows on the slatey-sloped hillsides along the river Sil. Virgen del Gali, part of the CVNE group, was established in 2002. Winemaker Miguel Tienda Baena is at the helm, and has a real passion for the Godello grape, which is carefully hand-picked here, then aged on its lees for four months in stainless steel tanks enhancing freshness and texture.
