Vacqueyras Rouge 'Fontimple', Rhonéa 2020
This Vacqueyras from the Southern Rhône appellation next door to Gigondas (just east of Avignon) is knock-down delicious - I even ordered a case after finishing my first glass. It exemplifies why so many critics and savvy wine lovers continue to look to the Southern Rhône for superior quality-for-money cuvées, particularly when seeing what heights Burgundy and Bordeaux prices continue to hit. What’s more, it’s quality not just in terms of France, but of anywhere.
From the highly praised 2020 vintage, here is a blend of Grenache (50%), Syrah and Mourvèdre which, after four years of bottle ageing, is now showing alluring touches of maturity. ‘Fontimple’ is indeed a gorgeous wine already, and one that will be ever more so with further cellaring.

This is a truly excellent example from an excellent year. I bought an extra case in thr hope of letting it rest another few years in the cellar. Alas it never made it that far as it's fantastic drinking now. Get some while you can.
