Gigondas is the greatest of the smaller appellations in the southern Rhône and Château Raspail, run by the hugely talented Christian Meffre, makes one of its very best wines. Predominantly grenache, syrah and mourvèdre, this is a lovely cuvée we have been drinking in glorious, sunny Scottish highland weather.

An elegant, medium-bodied and peppery Gigondas from what is among the top estates in the appellation. Having initially offered this wine en primeur, we've managed to secure subsequent parcels which have been of the same great quality, and which you, our customers have loved.

A bit of history...

The name Gigondas is of Roman origin, the wines of which were highly prized by the ancient Romans. Appropriately, the estates current 19th-century Italianate château in the limestone hills just to the north-west of Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe was built with the proceeds of Eugène Raspails sale of a fine Roman sculpture to the British Museum in the 1860s. A copy of the statue remains in the château.

A medium bodied Gigondas, with ripe red fruits and white pepper notes. Shows through a delightful balance between elegance, structure and fruit.

"... I feared the 2021 Ch. Raspail Gigondas too young. But, again, what the heck do I know? Yes, it'll get better, but it’s an absolute joy now. A Grenache/Syrah/Mourvèdre blend from one of the finest producers - Christian Meffre - it’s wonderfully earthy and spicy with dark, dark fruit, olives and liquorice."
Jonathan Ray, The Spectator Magazine
"A typical blend around Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre from one of the top satellite appellations around Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe. Spicy and peppery with a touch of leather and game to dark, rich bramble fruit. On the palate a little bright edge of raspberry adds a top note, while liquorice and endive underpin the black fruit succulence. This feels as though it is built to age for me, and I would imagine 10 years will be taken in its stride."
