Chateau Musar Rouge, Bekaa Valley 2017
The late, great Auberon Waugh writing in The Spectator, was one of the first prominent wine critics to champion Gaston Hochar's Chateau Musar as the equal of Frances greatest Bordeaux châteaux. His enthusiasm has been shared by his successors Simon Hoggart and Jonathan Ray. This extraordinary wine, made sometimes within the sound of gunfire at 3,000 feet in the Bekaa valley in that beautiful and tragic country, the Lebanon, is handpicked by local Bedouin and completely organic. Once tasted, it is never forgotten. Musar is only sold when ready for drinking, but will keep and improve for decades.
When I first tasted this new vintage I was overwhelmed by the rich, ripe sweet fruit - like really good wines, it is already delicious and will only get better.
