A superb, all-round cross-section of fine wine favourites ranging from the elegance of Sancerre to matured, Rioja opulence.
Montagny 1er Cru, Domaine Des Vignes Bleues 2022
To quote Old Blue Eyes "two-thousand twenty-two was a very good year. A top vintage. A 1985 Burgundy or a 1982 Bordeaux. It was an annus mirabilis..." Neal Martin ('Review of Burgundy 2022, vinous.com)
Sancerre, Domaine de la Garenne 2022
Elegant aromas of ripe orchard fruit, citrus, gooseberry and tropical notes intermingle with a delicate, mineral character.
Rioja Gran Reserva, Monte Araya 2016
Gracefully matured; powerful, well-balanced, with intense red and black berries, roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and vanilla notes. A refined, Tempranillo/Garnacha Gran Reserva aged 24 months in American and French oak, plus another 36 in bottle. Eight years on, it’s incredible value.
Château Bonneau, Montagne Saint-Émilion 2019
Lovely ruby red sheen, real purity and freshness. Aromas of red berry fruit, plum and raspberry, notes of coffee and tobacco, a touch of truffle perhaps and herbaceous element on the finale.
On the palate equal complexity with rich, red-berry fruit leading evolving to darker berry, gentle spice and oaky nuance. Rustic touches towards the end, with nice, grippy 'chewy' tannins on the finish coupled to a freshness from the fruit that holds long on the palate.
'Piropo' Castello di Potentino, IGT Toscana 2017
This is delicious and complex wine made by Charlotte Horton of Castello di Potentino, entirely from Pinot Noir. A very serious, oak aged wine which has a long life ahead of it and gives excellent value for money. The land lies in a sheltered valley used since Etruscan times for the production of wine, it benefits from volcanic terroir and a micro-climate which produces this brilliant depth to the Pinot Noir. Piropo is the gemstone pyrope, a rare type of garnet which has a purple tonality and was used as a poetic metaphor for wine from Tuscany by Renaissance writers. A top FVD recommendation.
Brut Tradition 'Blanc de Noirs', Michel Guilleminot, Champagne
Michel Guilleminot Blanc de Noirs comes from the very south of Champagne in the beautiful Vallee de l'Aube. A lovely single grower champagne made by the 4th generation Guilleminot family.
